The presidents of three Mississippi higher learning institutions will speak in late summer at Mississippi State's 2014 Men of Color Summit.

The free, public lectures, panel discussion and other activities will take place at the university Aug. 28 and 29. "Global Competitiveness: Exploring Pathways Toward Academic Attainment" is this year's theme.

Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Aug. 29 at Colvard Student Union, summit participants will hear from MSU President Mark E. Keenum; Alfred "Al" Rankins Jr., newly named president of Alcorn State University; and Valmadge T. Towner, president of Coahoma Community College. Both Keenum and Rankins are MSU alumni.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 28, a K-12 Pathways Mini Summit at the Hunter Henry Center will feature educational administrators, teachers, parents and community leaders discussing challenges faced by today's young African-American males. The summit's opening day will conclude with a 6-8 p.m. Empowerment Dinner, also at Hunter Henry.

Other 2014 summit speakers include Donald M. "Field" Brown of Vicksburg, MSU's just-graduated 2014 Rhodes Scholar; Cory Anderson, vice president of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation in Little Rock, Arkansas; Edmond E. Hughes Jr., vice president for human resources and administration at Pascagoula-based Ingalls Shipbuilding; and Sean Suggs, vice president of administration at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi in Blue Springs.
