Resource Day will address family caregiving needs

Mississippi State University Extension Service will host a Resource Day on Tuesday, Sept. 21 for university employees and Starkville residents on caring for aging loved ones.

MSU's Caregivers on Campus Resource Day will offer caregivers the tools and knowledge to deal with the responsibilities of providing care to older, disabled or chronically ill family members or friends. An estimated 500 MSU employees face this challenge.

The event, in the Colvard Union's Foster Ballroom from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., will showcase the resources and services of almost 50 exhibitors in home services and adult day services, medical equipment and eldercare products, advisory and consultative services, eldercare residence and in-home options, rehabilitation programs and support groups, and government services for seniors.

The day also offers free, relevant publications from MSU's Extension Service, a healthy snack pack for the first 300 participants turning in evaluation forms, and door prize giveaways.

The following workshops will be held concurrently at 12:10, 1:10 and 5:10 p.m. on the third floor of the Union:

Taking Care of Yourself -- self-caring for the caregiver

Preparing to Care -- planning for the future needs of the care recipient

State Resources --getting help from the Division of Aging and Adult Services and the Area Agency on Aging

Parking is available for nonemployees at the Humphrey Coliseum/Sanderson Center parking lot. From the parking lot, event participants can take the Maroon or Purple route shuttle to Montgomery Hall, which is next to the Union. Shuttle service runs between these locations about every 7-10 minutes and is available until 5 p.m. for workshop participants. From 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., shuttle buses will pick participants up in front of the Colvard Union and take them back to the parking lot.
