The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Oktibbeha County until 4 p.m. this afternoon, meaning conditions are favorable for potentially severe weather.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., radar indicated a strong line of storms located from Memphis TN, back southwestward into north-central Louisiana moving toward the MSU area. There have been numerous wind damage reports from north-central Louisiana this morning. These storms are associated with a cold front that will be moving into eastern Mississippi this afternoon. The storm front should reach Starkville between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. Isolated cells are possible ahead of the main line and given the unstable environment could become severe quickly.
Tailgating/Event changes announced
Because of worsening weather conditions, including the potential for severe thunderstorms and straight-line winds that could reach 80 mph, some Homecoming and Game Day events are being adjusted.
All large tents in the Junction are this afternoon being dismantled as storms move eastward toward the Golden Triangle area. Setup for personal tailgating tents is being delayed until 7 p.m. tonight.
The Homecoming Parade has been cancelled, and a 5 p.m. pep rally and accompanying Family Frenzy are being moved to the Sanderson Center.
As of 1:55 p.m., Oktibbeha County was under a severe thunderstorm warning. The university will continue to monitor conditions and issue appropriate announcements as situations warrant.
