Senate leader from Vicksburg to speak next week at MSU

STARKVILLE, Miss.--The chairman of the Mississippi Senate's Education Committee visits Mississippi State Thursday [Oct. 27] as part of the university's 2005-06 Morris W. Collins Speaker Series.

Sen. Mike Chaney will discuss his professional life and career, as well as other topics, during a public presentation to begin at 3 p.m. in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library.

The visiting speaker series is an ongoing program of the MSU library system and its Congressional and Political Research Center, as well as the student John C. Stennis-G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Association, and Stennis Institute of Government.

Chaney is a Vicksburg businessman and farmer who represents Warren and Issaquena counties. A Tupelo native and 1966 MSU banking and finance graduate, he served in the Mississippi House of Representatives 1993-99 before winning his senate seat in 2000.

In addition to education, he serves on the Agriculture, Appropriations, Congressional Redistricting, Environmental Protection, Conservation and Water Resources, Insurance, Legislative Reapportionment, Ports and Marine Resources, and Universities and Colleges committees.

A Vietnam War veteran, he also holds membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, among other organizations.

The Collins Speaker Series is named for the Stennis Institute's founding executive director.
