Future architecture majors invited to summer program

High school students contemplating careers in architecture or related disciplines are encouraged to attend a special Mississippi State University summer program.

Open to persons 15 years of age and older, the School of Architecture's annual Design Discovery program will be held June 19-24. The application deadline is May 30.

What is involved in the profession of architecture? What do architectural students study in college? How can a person best prepare for an education in the field?

"Many students considering architecture have these or similar questions that should be answered before they make a decision," said program coordinator Shannon Criss.

Design Discovery's goal is to simulate the information, skill and intensity required for an architectural education. After the week-long experience, "participants should be able to make an informed career decision about architecture and its related disciplines," she said.

Also, the school "highly recommends" that students already accepted into the first-year design program for the fall semester attend the summer session, Criss added.

The School of Architecture is the state's only accredited academic program offering a professional degree in the field. The five-year bachelor's degree curriculum includes a final year spent in Jackson developing depth and expertise.

Design Discovery 1998 will coincide with the university's June 18 and 19, and 27 and 28 orientation sessions for new and transfer students. Incoming architecture majors who plan to attend the 1998 fall semester may register at these times.
