MERIDIAN, Miss.--Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves will be the graduation speaker Dec. 12 for fall commencement ceremonies at Mississippi State University-Meridian.
The program gets under way at 11 a.m. at the MSU Riley Center for Performing Arts and Education. More than 100 students are candidates for degrees.
Elected to statewide office in 2011, Reeves leads the 52-member Mississippi Senate. He successfully sought the state's second highest office on a platform of "keeping government spending under control, reforming education and making Mississippi a better place to raise a family."
A Rankin County native, Reeves is a graduate of Florence High School and honors graduate in economics of Millsaps College. He is an active Millsaps alumnus who serves on the investment policy board of the college's General Louis Wilson Fund and the Else School of Management's advisory committee.
In 2013, Reeves was named a Charter Champion by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. The year before, he was honored with a State Legislative Achievement Award by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for Legal Reform for leadership in passage of the "Sunshine Act" that requires the state's attorney general to follow an open and transparent process for awarding legal contracts. In 2012, he also received the Mississippi Municipal League's Legislator of the Year Award.
Reeves and his wife, the former Elee Williams of Tylertown, are the parents of three daughters, Sarah Tyler, Elizabeth Magee and Madeline Tate.
