STARKVILLE, Miss.--Works of a visiting New York City artist are on display through Nov. 7 at Mississippi State's Cullis Wade Depot Art Gallery.

Free and open to the public, the second-floor exhibition at the university's Welcome Center features a variety of pieces--ranging from sculpture to photography--created over artist Claudia DeMonte's extensive career.

DeMonte will discuss her works Oct. 2 during a 4:30 p.m. guided tour of the gallery. An opening reception in her honor takes place at 5-6:30 p.m. that day in the same location. Refreshments will be provided.

Influenced by the roles of women in societies around the world, the Queens Borough native's creations focus on habits and identities, such as the desire to own and acquire as many objects as possible.

DeMonte has more than 60 one-person shows and 300 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her mixed media and sculptural works are featured in the permanent collections in New York and Florida art museums of art, among others. For more, see www.claudiademonte.com.

The exhibition and related programs are made possible by the Mississippi Arts Commission, June Kelly Gallery in New York and MSU's College of Architecture, Art and Design.

The Wade gallery is one of several MSU art department venues that regularly features traveling exhibits, student shows, and group and solo exhibitions by professional artists. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and two hours before kickoff of every home football game.
