STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Clothesline Project returns to Mississippi State's Drill Field this week.
Sponsored Tuesday-Thursday [Sept. 16-18] by the university's health education and wellness department, the multi-colored T-shirt display will be featured 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day.
The Clothesline Project is a national program designed to address sexual assault against both women and men on college campuses. For more, visit www.clotheslineproject.org.
Leah Pylate, assistant director of health education and wellness and sexual assault, said the annual event has several major goals, including:
--Bearing witness to both survivors and victims;
--Assisting the healing process for people who have lost a loved one or are survivors of the violence;
--Educating, documenting and raising public awareness; and
--Providing a nationwide network of support, encouragement and information.
She said the various shirt colors on display have specific meanings.
"Yellow is for men and women who have been battered or assaulted; red, pink or orange, for those raped or sexually assaulted; white, for those who died of violence; blue or green, for survivors of incest or child sexual abuse; purple, those attacked because of their sexual orientation; and black, those attacked for political reasons," Pylate explained.
