STARKVILLE, Miss.--New artworks by a member of the Mississippi State art department faculty are on display through Sept. 6 at Mississippi State's Cullis Wade Depot Art Gallery.
Free and open to all, the exhibition titled "Facing South" features creations of associate professor Critz Campbell completed during his 2014 academic sabbaticals in North Carolina and Illinois.
Coordinator of the university art department's sculpture emphasis program, he has employed low-relief marquetry techniques to create large, dynamic works that explore ideas of Southern gothic landscape, literature and life experience.
The exhibition is made possible through a Mississippi Arts Commission mini-grant awarded to Campbell in late 2013.
Also free and open to all, a reception for Campbell takes place 5-7 p.m. Aug. 28 on the second floor of the University Welcome Center, located on the depot's east side. Refreshments will be provided. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
A member of the MSU faculty since 2005, Campbell is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Parnham College in Dorset, England, with additional studies completed at the Arco Centro de Communicao in Portugal and Penland School of Craft in North Carolina. The Cullis Wade Gallery is one of several art department venues that regularly feature traveling exhibits, student shows, and exhibitions by professional artists, among other events.
