Free and open to all, a number of campus programs during October will mark Mississippi State University's observance of Mississippi Archaeology Month.
On the 14th, Haagen Klaus of George Mason University will lead a 7 p.m. program entitled "New Discoveries of Human Sacrifice on the North Coast of Peru: Using Bioarchaeology to Reconstruct Ancient Ritual Violence." His presentation will be held in the third-floor Fowlkes Auditorium of the Colvard Student Union.
On the 19th, the Mississippi Archaeology Expo will take place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on the Drill Field. An array of educational and fun activities for all ages, the event will feature demonstrations of archaeological techniques, prehistoric and historic lifeways and artifact identification. This event is supported by the Mississippi Humanities Council through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Also scheduled will be a program on Near Eastern archaeology led by Israeli archaeologist Gabriel Barkay. Time and location of his program will be announced at a later date.
