Mississippi State's communication department is announcing its seventh annual golf tournament to raise funds for university scholarships.
To be held Oct. 18 at the MSU Institute of Golf on Miss. Highway 182 East at the university's golf course, the popular event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with registration, snacks and a putting contest.
In addition to raising money for MSU communication majors--currently totaling more than 560--the tournament was created to give participants opportunities to socialize with employees, alumni and friends of the land-grant institution and one of its largest departments.
"This year, we again are dedicating tournament proceeds to our Lora Defore Memorial Scholarships that support student internships around the country," said department head John Forde. "We hope to attract up to 120 players this year, which would greatly increase our scholarship funds."
A member of the communication faculty for nearly 20 years, DeFore died in 2009 following a long battle with cancer. In addition to teaching full-time, she coordinated the department's public relations concentration and internship programs.
All tournament players will receive gifts, with prizes awarded for overall winning teams, numerous hole competitions and pre-tournament putting and chipping contests.
Playing fees are $100 for all non-students and $50 for students with identification.
Competitors will be provided lunch, as well as soft and sports drinks throughout the day.
