STARKVILLE, Miss.--"The Art of Physics" exhibition now being featured in Mississippi State's Colvard Student Union features works by university faculty and staff from various departments, including physics and astronomy, geosciences, and engineering.

Running through Sept. 20, the free public exhibit in the second-floor gallery is organized by the union's Center for Student Activities, Maroon Edition common reading experience and College of Architecture, Art and Design's art department.

Also free and open to all at the gallery, an opening reception will take place 4-6 p.m. Thursday [Aug. 29]. Light refreshments will be served.

Representing artistic beauty and stunning imagery captured by scientists while conducting research, the display is designed to enhance appreciation for this year's Maroon Edition selection, "Physics for Future Presidents" (2008, W.W. Norton & Co.) by Richard A. Muller.

Muller--a nationally recognized University of California, Berkeley scientist--provides an easy-to-comprehend, non-technical discussion of the science behind major issues that may confront future government and business leaders at all levels.

Similarly, the Colvard exhibition is meant to illustrate how art can come in all forms and may be viewed differently by each individual.

The Maroon Edition project is an annual initiative to engage all freshmen, along with interested members of the campus community, in reading the same book during the summer term and fall semester. Stimulating intellectual and cultural discussions and encouraging dialogues among campus community members are its primary goals.

The Colvard gallery is open 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The 1,000-square-foot studio regularly features museum shows, traveling exhibits, student shows, group and solo exhibitions by professional artists, and special events.
