MSU building construction science program honors top students

STARKVILLE, Miss.--Ten Mississippi State students from Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee are selections for 2013 scholarships and awards in building construction science at the university's College of Architecture, Art and Design.

One of only two in the nation, the studio-based bachelor's degree program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in construction or construction-related fields. Its interdisciplinary curriculum provides a broad knowledge base in business, engineering and construction sciences.

The newest group of BCS Scholars include (by hometown):

ARLINGTON, Tenn.--May graduate Geoffery B. "Bo" Walters, son of Geoff and Gina Walters of Wilsonville, Ala., receiving the Director's Medallion in recognition of exceptional academic effort and demonstrated leadership abilities, among other criteria.

BRANDON--Sophomore Jackson Parker, son of Lloyd and Denise Parker, receiving a Student of the Year Award for the highest grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester.

FAIRHOPE, Ala.--Junior Savannah M. Harvey, daughter of Bobby and Debbie Harvey, receiving the $5,000 Hearin Foundation and $1,000 Boral Bricks scholarships.

FRANKLIN, Tenn.--Incoming freshman Owen A. McVitty, son of James and Alicia McVitty, receiving the $1,000 Kline Mechanical Systems Annual and $2,000 State Board of Contractors scholarships; and junior Allie N. Salas, daughter of Michael and Sherrie Salas, receiving a $5,000 Hearin Foundation Scholarship and a Student of the Year Award for the highest grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester.

HERNANDO--Senior Joseph D. Witherspoon, son of Dan and Christina Witherspoon, receiving the $1,000 Associated Builders and Contractors Scholarship.

HOUSTON--Senior Joshua A. Moore, son of Tina Smith and Tim Moore, receiving the $1,000 State Board of Contractors and $1,000 Boral Bricks scholarships.

OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala.--Senior Devin M. Compher, daughter of Steve and Lori Compher, receiving the $1,000 Abbey Burnett Bridges Endowed Scholarship and a Student of the Year Award for the highest grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester.

SENATOBIA--May graduate Adam W. Moore, son of Marty and Melissa Geeslin of Coldwater, receiving a Student of the Year Award for the highest grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester.

VICKSBURG--Senior Joshua L. "Josh" Rushing, son of Jerry and Dorothy Rushing, receiving the $1,000 Chip & Jennifer Crane Endowed and $1,000 State Board of Contractors scholarships.
