STARKVILLE, Miss.--Alpha Delta Pi social sorority is taking the first steps to open a new campus chapter at Mississippi State.
The student organization will launch a membership recruiting effort, starting Jan. 22.
Originally called the "Adelphean Society," ADPi--as it's often referred--was the world's first sorority. Since being founded in 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Ga., it has grown to include nearly 215,000 women at more than 140 colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. National executive offices are located in Atlanta.
"Alpha Delta Pi is an excellent national organization that has a strong presence on many Southern campuses," said Eddie Keith, associate dean of students. "They have had a chapter at MSU before and have a nucleus of MSU alumnae."
In addition to reestablishing its membership, the chapter also is making plans for construction of a residence in Sorority/Fraternity Park, which is located on the south side of Bully Boulevard.
Keith said the sorority places a high priority on scholarship, community service and personal development. In addition to a commitment to high academic standards for members, it also works to prepare members for the post-graduation world with a Leadership Program designed to help developing members' leadership skills.
Ronald McDonald House Charities are the organization's international philanthropy.
