STARKVILLE, Miss.--A flyover by Mississippi State President Robert H. "Doc" Foglesong will kick off the university's annual veterans' tribute Nov. 18.
A retired Air Force four-star general and career pilot who's flown most planes in the U.S. inventory, Foglesong is joining pilots from nearby Columbus Air Force Base for a flyover preceding MSU's home game with the University of Arkansas.
The Southeastern Conference contest begins at 1:30 p.m. at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field.
"It's my personal salute to our students who are veterans, and to all veterans who have served their nation," said the 33-year military veteran.
Earlier this year, the university established the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Center for America's Veterans, which is being dedicated formally at 10 a.m. that day. Foglesong developed the new initiative, with a goal of making Mississippi State the national institution of choice for U.S. veterans.
Also preceding Saturday's game, the Montgomery Center will join with the Army and Air Force reserve officers training programs and the Famous Maroon Band for pre-game and halftime ceremonies commemorating veterans.
Students, faculty and staff who have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom will receive special recognition during the pre-game program. The band's patriotic salute is scheduled for halftime.
"Through these events, Mississippi State pays tribute to the men and women of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard," Foglesong said. "It's one way we honor all that they've done."
