UPM seeks faculty authors during visit Monday

MSU will host a campus visit from University Press of Mississippi officials on Monday [Nov. 12], during University Press Week (November 11-17). The event will be held at 11 a.m. in Mitchell Memorial Library's Templeton Music Museum.

The UPM campus visit will be led by UPM director Leila Salisbury. UPM marketing director Steve Yates will give a presentation he calls “How to Parse a Press.” Yates is a university press publishing professional and published fiction writer. UPM professionals Walter Biggins and Craig Gill will also be on campus to help potential faculty authors.

In the session, UPM professionals will help faculty discover ways to discern which university press might be right for a particular manuscript.

The UPM contingent hopes to address the following questions: How does one tell what a publisher wants? What topics are certain publishers good at publishing? How does a press reveal its core competencies and structure? What characteristics can show the prospecting scholar with a manuscript what a university press is like? What it does well? What it might not do well?

Every year, UPM visits its eight supporting state universities. UPM staff deliver seminars and meet with faculty to share publishing advice and expertise, discuss the digital transformation of books into ebooks, explore options for scholarly communication, and help Mississippi scholars shape manuscripts and publishing ideas. UPM records these seminars and shares them here. UPM is sustainably supported by Alcorn State University, Delta State University, Jackson State University, MSU, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi Valley State University, University of Southern Mississippi, and University of Mississippi.

MSU is represented on the UPM board of director by MSU Provost Jerry Gilbert and MSU director of university relations Sid Salter.
