STARKVILLE, Miss.--The State Messengers Jazz and Steel Drum bands of Mississippi State's music department will be featured Oct. 4 during a free concert in downtown Starkville.

The 6 p.m. concert of jazz and Latin selections takes place at the Cadence Bank Plaza. An approximately one-hour performance, the event is an ongoing program sponsored by the Starkville Symphony Orchestra and Cadence Bank as a "thank-you" to the local community.

To help enhance the evening's Caribbean music theme, audience members are encouraged to wear bright colored shirts and blouses

Chairs will be provided, and Cadence is making available free popcorn and soft drinks.

The program will be led by Michael Brown, head of the MSU music department and SSO music director.

The State Messengers include faculty members Richard Human and Clifton Taylor on trombone, and Brown on trumpet.

Jason Baker both directs and drums for the steel band. Also in the combo are music department graduates James Nail on bass and Myra Wingo on piano.

The Greensboro Center will be the alternate location in case of rain.
