STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State's communication department is sponsoring an Oct. 12 golf tournament to generate funds for freshman and transfer student scholarships.

The public event at the par-72 MSU Golf Course on Highway 182 precedes the university's Southeastern Conference home football game the following day with the University of Tennessee. Preliminary activities get under way at noon, followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Sept. 28 is the registration deadline; forms may be downloaded via http://www.comm.msstate.edu/. Rain will move the tournament to Nov. 9.

The registration fee of $55 per person or $220 per team covers cost of the greens fee, golf cart, practice balls, and one ticket per player for a barbecue dinner.

Department head John E. Forde said the tournament is a first for the academic unit.

"We're hopeful this can become an annual, much-anticipated event for students, faculty, alumni, and friends that will help support scholarships for deserving majors," Forde said.

"We greatly appreciate all the assistance we've received from the MSU Golf Course, MSU Foundation and alumni association, among many," he added.

Forde also said tournament sponsorships are available for interested organizations or individuals. Differing sponsorship levels provide supporters with free or reduced tournament fees and other benefits for their assistance.

The communication department enrolls nearly 500 students and is among the College of Arts and Sciences' largest. It offers curriculum concentrations in broadcasting, communication studies, journalism, public relations, and theater.
