STARKVILLE, Miss.-For the eighth consecutive year, Mississippi State is offering its popular floral design workshop.
The July 23-27 campus program will cover all of the basics while providing both entry-level training and advanced experiences in professional floral design.
July 16 is the registration deadline. Class size is limited.
Jim DelPrince, MSU associate professor of plant and soil sciences, again is serving as workshop director. A researcher and specialist in 19th century creations, the veteran faculty member most recently was featured speaker at Winterthur, the DuPont family museum and country estate in Delaware recognized internationally for its naturalistic garden and conservation and research facilities.
"From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, we will be focusing on such topics as flowers-to-wear, hand-tied bouquets, massive party and altar designs, sympathy designs, and much more," DelPrince said.
Commercial florist William Brewer of Gulfport and Lynette McDougald, University Florist business manager and design instructor, also will share teaching duties. Both are among only about a dozen Mississippians holding accreditation from the American Institute of Floral Designers, the profession's top recognition.
Brewer, a Mississippi Florist Association Designer of the Year winner and owner of Cardinal Florist, will lead a program on the changing market for sympathy flowers and burial customs, as well as the evolution of consumer demand.
McDougald, a specialist in floral designs for the liturgical calendar and on-line floral procurement, will direct training in arrangements for large-scale environments, specifically lighting and color usage to maximize impact and budget.
