STARKVILLE, Miss.--The annual Shamrock philanthropic events of Mississippi State's Kappa Delta social sorority will be held on campus during March.
"Stand Up for a Cause" is the 2007 theme. In that vein, volunteers in the university chapter will participate in a 12-hour "dance-a-thon" on the 25th. Taking place 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at the KD House on Sorority Row, the challenge will be preceded by the public solicitation of $1-an-hour donations to support individual "Stand Up" participants.
Eighty percent of collected proceeds will remain in Mississippi to benefit the Sally Kate Winters Memorial Children's Home in West Point. The remainder will go for public awareness programs of Prevent Child Abuse America, the sorority's national philanthropy.
Other public Shamrock fund-raising events include:
--A "KD King" contest on the 8th featuring members of MSU fraternities attired as their favorite super heroes. Tickets are $3 per person for the 6 p.m. program in Lee Hall auditorium to crown the best entrant; and
--A $5-per-person pancake dinner, also on the 8th, being held 10 p.m-1 a.m. at the house.
Also during the month, the chapter will honor faculty members with a cookout and welcome Winters Home residents for an evening meal followed by bowling at the local lanes.
Founded in 1897, KD began supporting PCA America in 1981 and began the Shamrock events nationwide two years later. To date, the national organization has raised more than $8 million to benefit child abuse prevention.
The MSU chapter was chartered in 1971 and has a current membership of more than 180.
