STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State sophomore George R. Harris of Senatobia is the new president of the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference, which encompasses the governing bodies of Greek-letter social fraternities at colleges and universities in 10 states.
A business administration major and member of Sigma Chi, Harris currently serves as vice president of the MSU Interfraternity Council. He is the first student from a Mississippi school to head the regional organization.
In his new position, the 20-year-old Tate Countian will lead a team of council vice presidents from throughout the region in planning and implementing the 2007 SEIFC Leadership Academy scheduled for next February.
He is Dean's Scholar and University Honors Program member.
Founded in Jackson more than 40 years ago during a meeting of student leaders and fraternity professionals, SEIFC is one of six regional, voluntary associations throughout North America designed to bring together institutions and individuals with a commitment to fraternity life on college and university campuses.
With more than 100 governing councils currently holding membership, institutions with 3,000-30,000 student populations are served by the organization's administrative offices at the University of Miami (Fla).
