STARKVILLE, Miss.--Two entering freshmen in Mississippi State's Bagley College of Engineering are the latest recipients of J.P. Applewhite Scholarships.

The 2005 scholarship recipients are:

--Sarah E. Crosby, a chemical engineering major from Decatur and the daughter of the Rev. Johnny and Connie Crosby; and

--J. Phillip Moore, a mechanical engineering major from Clinton and the son of John and Susan Moore.

James P. Applewhite, a 1917 civil engineering graduate of Mississippi A&M College (now MSU), established the scholarship fund to provide for faculty development, research and student scholarships in engineering. His goal was to recognize incoming students who excelled academically in high school and are pursuing a degree in one of the engineering disciplines.

The Applewhite scholarship awards range from $1,500-$3,000 per year over eight semesters. Recipients may renew their awards each year, provided their grade-point average remains above 3.0.

Crosby and Moore join nine other current Applewhite Scholars in the Bagley college. They include:

--Robert F. Hoyt, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Gulfport and the son of Bruce and Lynn Hoyt;

--Christopher T. Craft, a senior aerospace engineering major from Clinton and the son of James and Pamela Craft;

--Ridzky A. Riyadi, a junior computer engineering major from Ridgeland [Parents' names are not available.];

--Daniel N. Payment, a junior software engineering major from Huntsville, Ala., and the son of Timothy and Kathleen Payment [ZIP code 35803];

--Holly R. Hickman, a sophomore biological engineering major from Picayune and the daughter of Vernon and Debbie Hickman;

--Hawley R. Robertson, a sophomore biological engineering major from Moss Point and the son of Kenneth and Lisa Robertson;

--Elyse C. Thomas, a senior biological engineering major from Cleveland and the daughter of Kenneth and Gwendolyn Thomas;

--McKinley G. Freeman, a junior computer science major from Ocean Springs and the son of McKindley* and Sue Freeman; and
