Contact: Sammy McDavid

STARKVILLE, Miss.--Some 170 students are newly inducted members in the Mississippi State University chapter of the nation's leading higher education honor society.

Phi Kappa Phi membership is open to juniors and seniors at the top of their class in all majors. Graduate students and occasional sophomores whose scholastic achievements are at the very highest levels also are eligible.

During the induction ceremony, Eric Shows of Ellisville, who had been inducted earlier, was presented with a $2,000 PKP Award of Excellence for graduate study during the 2005-06 school year. A May summa cum laude graduate in biochemistry, he is among only 40 U.S. students receiving the honor society's graduate fellowship this year.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine. At present, there are more than 250 chapters worldwide with a total membership of some 50,000.

In addition to the students, assistant art professor Angi E. Bourgeois, industrial engineering professor Royce O. Bowen, associate agricultural economics professor Keith H. Coble, agricultural economics professor Lynn L. Reinschmiedt, and forest resources research assistant Mark D. Smith were inducted as honorary members during the spring.
