The son of jazz legend Dave Brubeck brings his own versatile group to Mississippi State Oct. 5 to help launch the university's 2004-05 Lyceum Series.
The concert by Chris Brubeck's "Triple Play" begins at 7:30 p.m. in the university's Colvard Union ballroom.
With a repertoire that includes folk, blues, jazz, funk, and classical selections, the performers are Peter "Mudcat" Ruth on harmonica, guitar, jaw harp, percussion, and vocals; Joel Brown, folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals; and Brubeck, electric bass, bass trombone, piano, and vocals.
Available at the door, tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for persons 65 and over (by request) and $11 for children 3-12. MSU students are admitted free with identification cards.
Brubeck is an award-winning composer who has earned acclaim from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Also an orchestral arranger and lyricist at home with a variety of musical styles, he recently was appointed a 2004-05 American Symphony League "Music Alive" composer-in-residence by California's Stockton Symphony Orchestra.
"Mudcat" Ruth has established an international reputation as a harmonica virtuoso. Starting in Chicago, he originally played folk/blues on guitar and studied harmonica with Big Walter Horton.
Joel Brown's career has taken him from the London Symphony and Carnegie Hall to the Lincoln Center, Tanglewood Festival and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
MSU Lyceum Series season tickets are $50 and may be purchased at the door or ordered by sending a check and stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Lyceum Series Season Tickets, P.O. Box HY, Mississippi State, MS 39762. Each purchase also covers performances by MSU music faculty as part of the Lyceum Faculty Chamber Series.
While seating is general admission, priority locations may be provided for season ticket holders.
Other performances of the 2004-05 season include political satirists The Capitol Steps; National Players presentation of "The Oedipus Cycle"; chamber musicians Camerata Sweden; and The Freddy Cole Quartet, a jazz vocal ensemble.
