Katie E. Pigford of Meridian is receiving the 2002-03 Hulett Scholarship to support her continued study of science at Mississippi State University.

Made possible through an endowment from Dr. Karen D. Hulett, an MSU alumna, and her husband, Dr. William B. Hulett, of Jackson, the $2,000 award recognizes the classroom achievements of students at the sophomore level or higher enrolled in any science major.

Pigford, a junior biological sciences major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Pigford and a 2000 Lamar High School graduate.

The scholarship reflects Karen Hulett's area of study and 1972 general science degree from the College of Arts and Sciences, said Dean Philip B. Oldham.

"The Huletts are loyal supporters of the fund-raising and recruiting efforts of the college and Mississippi State," Oldham said. "Their scholarship gift will help deserving students attend the university for years to come."

A New Orleans, La., native, Karen Hulett was honored by the college in 2000 as its alumna of the year. She is a self-employed medical consultant, while her husband William, a Charleston native, is a self-employed anesthesiologist.

The Huletts are members of the arts and sciences college's advisory and development council. Additionally, Karen Hulett is a member of the MSU Foundation board of directors.

The Hulett Endowed Scholarship is an open fund in the MSU Foundation and may be increased through additional contributions.
