More than 130 mathematicians and scientists from around the world are at Mississippi State this week for the university's fifth biannual Conference on Differential Equations and Computational Simulations.
Daylong sessions Friday and Saturday [18th and 19th] at the Wise Center will include participants from throughout the United States and 16 other countries.
First held on campus in 1993, the conference is sponsored by the department of mathematics and statistics, colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering, and Office of Research. The National Science Foundation, Electronic Journal of Differential Equations, and Institute for Mathematics and its Applications are co-sponsors.
"Our conference provides a forum for mathematicians, scientists and engineers from academia and industry to exchange research ideas involving computational and theoretical developments," said coordinator Bharat Soni. "We are extremely proud that it has grown to become an internationally recognized event."
Soni, an aerospace engineering professor, said this year's 11 invited speakers are "world-renowned experts in differential equations and computational simulations." Among them are teachers and researchers at Cornell and Brigham Young universities and the University of Tokyo.
Gary Lyles, manager of Advance Space Transportation program at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Hunstville, Ala., is featured speaker for the concluding Saturday night banquet.
Joining Soni as conference organizers are MSU mathematics and statistics professors Ratnasingham Shivaji and Jianping Zhu.
