A new forest resources management graduate of Mississippi State is among 33 university and college students recently named a National Council of State Garden Clubs Scholar.
Scott L. Edwards of Meridian is receiving a $3,500 scholarship. A Meridian High School graduate and son of the Rev. and Mrs. Wayne Edwards, he was among nearly 2,200 Mississippi State students awarded degrees May 12.
Edwards, who has been a President's Scholar while completing his bachelor's degree, will continue his education in the university's wildlife and fisheries graduate-degree program.
The Garden Club scholarship is awarded to juniors, seniors and graduate students majoring in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, botany, biology, forestry, agronomy, conservation, plant pathology, or related areas. In addition to academic achievements, scholars are selected on the basis of leadership abilities and dedication to a profession related to gardening or the environment.
Established in 1891, the St. Louis, Mo.-based National Council of State Garden Clubs is a not-for-profit educational organization with more than 235,000 members spread among some 9,000 local affiliates in the United States and other countries.
