Some 200 civil engineering majors and teachers are at Mississippi State University Friday and Saturday [March 30-31] for a series of regionally competitive events.
They are participants in the 2001 Deep South Student Chapter Conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers. MSU's civil engineering department is host of this year's gathering.
In addition to MSU, the students come from Arkansas State, Louisiana State, Louisiana Tech, Southern, and Tulane universities, as well as the universities of Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi and New Orleans.
On Friday, the competition involves bridge design, environmental projects and surveying, among other activities.
On Saturday, team members gather in swim gear at Oktibbeha County Lake near Adaton to test which school is home to the most water-worthy concrete canoe. A public event, the rock-hard regatta launches at 9 a.m. and continues until a winner is determined.
