A Mississippi State outreach program and the Oktibbeha County United Way are working to gather more than 5,000 canned goods for distribution next week to local victims of the recent violent storms.

The drive, which ends at 5 p.m. Tuesday [March 6], is coordinated on campus by the university's Outreach and Service Learning Center, a Campus Link AmeriCorps program.

Contributions of non-perishable canned goods may be left at the Campus Outreach Office in 207 Colvard Union or in academic and service department main offices, residence hall front desks and the front doors of sorority and fraternity houses.

"We're also recruiting volunteer drivers to pick up and deliver the accumulated canned goods Wednesday [March 7] to the local Salvation Army and American Red Cross offices for distribution," said coordinator Kathryn Blanche.

A part of the MSU Division of Student Affairs, the Campus Outreach Office assists the local Habitat for Humanity program, county food pantries and elementary schools, and various other community service groups. Some 100 student, faculty and staff volunteers are regularly involved in the effort.
