Spring semester "Discovery: MSU," Mississippi State's introductory program for prospective students, will be held Friday [Feb. 16].

"High school and community college students from throughout the region have been invited to join the university for what should be a most informative and enjoyable day," said John R. Dickerson, director of enrollment services.

Following registration in the Colvard Union lobby, an opening assembly gets under way at 9:30 a.m. in the nearby ballroom. Following the assembly, students-and their parents-will have an opportunity to meet with advisers, faculty and staff in their chosen fields of study.

Last year's "Discovery" drew more than 2,000 participants, Dickerson said.

Also part of the day's schedule will be academic competitions for more than 1,200 juniors and seniors in the subjects of American history, art, chemistry, foreign languages, and physics. The art competition requires submission of a portfolio showing as many different types of a student's work as possible.

Top scorers in history, chemistry and physics will receive MSU scholarships, plaques or other awards. Those successfully completing the foreign language test will be eligible to receive up to eight hours of course credit at the university in French, German, Latin, or Spanish.

For more information about these competitions, contact Edmond Emplaincourt in foreign languages at (662) 325-3480; Soon Ee Ngoh in art, 325-2973; Danette Barrier in physics and astronomy, 325-2806; Svein Saebo in chemistry, 325-7813; or Clifford Ryan in history, 325-7087.
