The Kappa Delta social sorority at Mississippi State is sponsoring two fund-raising events March 3 as part of a national effort supporting child abuse prevention.

The university women's organization will hold its 18th annual Shamrock Fun Run/Walk and Golf Tournament to benefit the Sally Kate Winters Memorial Children's Home in West Point.

The fun run/walk will take place 10 a.m.-noon at the Joe Frank Sanderson Center on campus, while the golf tournament begins at 9 a.m. at the MSU Golf Course, which is located three miles east of campus on state Highway 182.

The MSU chapter joins sister organizations on other campuses holding fund raisers to benefit local affiliates of Prevent Child Abuse America, the sorority's national philanthropy.

"Eighty percent of the funds we collect will remain in child abuse prevention programs in the Starkville area," said junior Jodie Harper of Laurel, a local event coordinator. "The remaining 20 percent will go to PCAA for nationwide public awareness programs."

Kappa Delta sorority began supporting PCAA in 1981. Over the years, more than $4.5 million has been raised nationwide through the annual Shamrock events.
