Mississippi State is expecting more than 4,000 persons to take part Saturday [Oct. 28] in the university's fall weekend program for prospective students.

"Discovery: MSU" is scheduled 9 a.m.-noon on the University Drill Field. The information-sharing program again is being held in conjunction with Parents' Weekend, a two-day recognition of the families of already-enrolled students.

Sponsored by the Office of Enrollment Services, the two events conclude with the 1:30 p.m. Homecoming football game with Middle Tennessee State University.

"Discovery" features some 75 exhibits and displays prepared by academic and student-support departments. Booths dispensing snacks, soft drinks and MSU food products also will welcome visitors. Under the Big Top tent, the MSU Stage and Alumni bands, Black Voices and other groups will provide musical entertainment.

"The departments work very hard to develop creative displays that illustrate to high school and community college students and their parents what Mississippi State has to offer," said enrollment services director John Dickerson. "That's why 'Discovery' always is such a colorful and exciting campus event."

Parents' Weekend gets under way Friday [the 27th] with 9-11 a.m. registration at the Big-Top. President Malcolm Portera and Vice President for Student Affairs Roy Ruby will open the program, after which participants may tour campus and meet with faculty members and academic advisers. A casual supper with administrators will conclude the first day's events.

Parents can begin Saturday's activities with a coffeehouse and continental breakfast, followed by a special program led by some of the university's top teaching faculty.
