Three veteran university faculty members from two states will team up next month to lead a major workshop in Warren County on hardwood management.

Titled "Natural Regeneration of Hardwoods," the Oct. 16-19 program is sponsored by the Anderson-Tully Co. and Mississippi State's College of Forest Resources and Division of Continuing Education.

MSU's Andy Ezell and John Hodges will be joined by Brian Lockhart of Louisiana State University to provide on-site examinations of operational locations and in-depth class discussions.

Their names have become almost synonymous with Southern hardwood management and their leadership is widely recognized in both industry and research," program coordinator Alan Brown said.

Oct. 9 is the registration deadline for this year's instructional sessions, which will take place in and around Vicksburg. Though designed specifically for foresters, wildlife managers and timberland owners, the training is open to all interested persons.

Brown said this year's workshop differs from past offerings in that all field instruction will be conducted in fully operational management areas.

"Participants will tour both upland and bottomland sites, review methods being applied there and discuss successes and challenges," he said. "Emphasis will be placed on the most successful methods, but attention also will be paid to factors that can reduce the desirable hardwood regeneration in a stand."
