A veteran Mississippi State administrator and faculty member is the university's new associate vice president for research.
Jonathan W. Pote, a professor of agricultural and biological engineering, has been named to the position, pending formal approval of the state Board of Trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning.
A member of the faculty since 1985, Pote led the MSU-based Water Resources Research Institute from 1992 until his 1998 appointment as interim associate vice president.
"Dr. Pote has extensive research experience in the areas of water chemistry, quality, conservation and management, as well as environmental planning, aquaculture and alternative agriculture," said Vice President for Research Robert A. Altenkirch. "In addition, he has a proven track record in taking a research institute to new levels of external funding and accomplishment."
Development of strategic areas of research investment and coordination of university centers and institutes will be among Pote's major responsibilities.
A former resident of Pine Bluff, Ark., he holds a bachelor's degree from Hendrix College in Conway and a doctorate from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He also completed a master's at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
Pote has served as president of the National Institutes of Water Resources and chair of the Universities Council on Water Resources' Policy, Legislation and Administration Committee.
