The spring semester edition of "Discovery: MSU," Mississippi State's special day for prospective students, will be held Feb. 18.
"A slate of events has been scheduled to give students an in-depth view of the university, with particular emphasis on our academic endeavors," said Jimmy Abraham, director of enrollment services. "We are inviting all high school and community college students to join us for what should be a most informative and enjoyable program."
Following registration in the Colvard Union ballroom, an opening assembly will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Lee Hall auditorium. Following the assembly, students-and their parents-will have an opportunity to meet with advisers, faculty and staff in their chosen fields of study.
Last year's "Discovery" drew more than 2,000 participants, Abraham said.
Also part of the day's schedule will be academic competitions for more than 1,200 juniors and seniors in the subjects of American history, art, chemistry, foreign languages, and physics. The art competition requires submission of a portfolio showing as many different types of a student's work as possible.
Top scorers in history, chemistry and physics will receive MSU scholarships, plaques or other awards. Those successfully completing the foreign language test will be eligible to receive up to eight hours of course credit at the university in French, German, Latin, or Spanish.
For more information about these competitions, contact Edmond Emplaincourt in foreign languages at (662) 325- 3480; Soon Ee Ngoh in art, 325-2973; Danette Barrier in physics, 325-2806; Rickey Hicks in chemistry, 325-7813; and Clifford Ryan in history, 325-7087.
