Small visitors from outer space to land at MSU

A collection of moon rocks joins pieces of meteorites that fell on Antarctica in a Thursday [Sept. 9] display at Mississippi State University.

The mineral specimens will be on exhibit 1:30-4:30 p.m. in 511 Allen Hall. The display is sponsored by the geosciences department.

Encased in plastic for their protection, the delicate lunar samples are chips of larger rocks collected on various National Aeronautics and Space Administration missions in the early 1970s. Microscopes will provide close views of the chips and sliced rock and meteorite sections.

"These samples are part of a NASA lending program," said Bruce Panuska, associate professor of geosciences. "As far as we know, they are the first ever displayed at Mississippi State."

Geosciences faculty members will be on hand to answer questions during the exhibition, he added.
