History department names new head

An Oxford University graduate is the new head of Mississippi State University's history department.

Godfrey N. Uzoigwe, who began his duties July 1, succeeds Charles D. Lowery, who retired June 30 after 33 years at the university. Formal approval of Uzoigwe's appointment is expected at an upcoming meeting of the Board of Trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning.

A native of Nigeria, Uzoigwe [pronounced oo-zoy-gway] has taught in Ireland, Uganda, the United States, and his native country. Since 1966, he has served as dean of the College of Humanities at Imo State University in Owerri, Nigeria. Prior to that, he led the history department at Nigeria's the University of Calabar.

He is a fellow of the New York Academy of Science and the Historical Society of Nigeria, and an honorary Fellow with the Institute of Administration Management of Nigeria and the International Multi-Disciplinary Science Institute at the College of William and Mary.

He holds a bachelor's degree from University College in Dublin, Ireland, a postgraduate professional teaching diploma from the University of Dublin's Trinity College and a doctorate from Oxford.
