Classes for the 119th fall semester at Mississippi State University begin Monday, Aug. 23.
Mississippi A&M College, the original name of the state's comprehensive land-grant institution, was established in 1878 and welcomed its first students two years later.
Campus housing opens for residency at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14. New student orientation is scheduled on the 18th for all persons who didn't take part in the June sessions.
Final regular fall registration will be held Aug. 19 and 20, with late registration continuing through Sept. 3.
Other major MSU dates for the first semester of the school year include:
--Sept. 6, Labor Day holiday [university closed].
--Sept. 11, Scholars' Recognition Day for top high school seniors, held in conjunction with MSU's home football game with the University of Memphis.
--Sept. 17 and 18, combined Parent's Weekend for the moms and dads of enrolled students and "Discovery Day" (18th only) for prospective students, both in conjunction with the Oklahoma State University football game.
--Oct. 23, Homecoming festivities for alumni and friends, in conjunction with the Louisiana State University football game.
--Nov. 25 and 26, Thanksgiving holidays [university closed].
--Dec. 6, last day for all new students to apply for 2000 spring semester admission.
--Dec. 17, fall commencement exercises.
New student orientation for the 2000 spring semester will be held Jan. 5, with second-semester classes beginning on the 10th. Spring commencement exercises will be May 13.
