Mississippi State University Provost David Cole (right) congratulates the newest William L. Giles Distinguished Professors, David R. Shaw (left) and Ratnasingham Shivaji. Shaw is a weed scientist in the department of plant and soil sciences and Shivaji is a professor in mathematics and statistics. A Giles professorship is the highest academic rank bestowed on faculty members and is based on research, scholarship, outstanding teaching, and service. Of more than 800 faculty members, only 15 others currently hold the honor named for the university's 13th president. The selections were announced at the recent faculty recognition banquet.
