A local student who graduated from The Juilliard School will be the guest performer Sunday [April 18] for a Starkville Artist Series concert.
Violinist Shandy Phillips joins the Starkville/Mississippi State University Symphony for a program at the Greensboro Center, 401 Greensboro St. The 3 p.m. event is free to the public.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Phillips and a 1992 Starkville High School graduate, Phillips attended the New York music school as a Jan and Berth Werter Scholar and an M&E Cohen Scholar. After receiving a bachelor's at Juilliard, she completed a master of music degree from the Boston Conservancy, where she was a Conservatory Scholar.
Under the direction of conductor Denise Rowan, the symphony and Phillips will perform Bartok's "Rumanian Folk Dances," Navascuez' "Gypsy Airs for Solo Violin and Orchestra," and Haydn's "Surprise." Phillips also performs Saint-Saens' "Havanaise," Op. 83 for Solo Violin and Orchestra.
Now residing in Boston, Phillips works as a freelance violinist appearing regularly in concerts and recordings with the Tim Janis Ensemble. Her CD credits also include a performance with members of the Juilliard Orchestra in the premiere performance of the Hudson Oratorio by Frederick Rich.
Now in its 30th season, the Starkville/Mississippi State University Symphony Association sponsors orchestral and choral concerts, as well as educational programs for area schools.
