High school students contemplating careers in architecture are encouraged to attend a special Mississippi State University summer program.

Open to persons 15 years of age and older, the School of Architecture's 1999 Design Discovery will be held June 18-25. The application deadline is May 31.

"This eight-day workshop is designed to answer many of the questions about architecture as a field of study and a profession," said program director Jason Vollen. "With this experience, it will be possible for the participants to make an informed career decision about architecture and its related disciplines."

For students already accepted into the architecture school's first-year design program, attendance at Design Discovery "is highly recommended," Vollen added.

For minority students in Leflore County, the Greenwood architectural firm of Johnson-McAdams P.A. is supporting a scholarship program to attend Design Discovery. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of demonstrated drawing ability and a one-page typed essay describing the applicant's interest in architecture. May 29 is the scholarship application deadline.

The MSU school is the state's only accredited academic program offering a professional degree in architecture. The five-year bachelor's degree curriculum includes a final year spent in Jackson developing depth and expertise.

Design Discovery will coincide with the university's June 17 and 18, and 26 and 27 orientation sessions for new and transfer students. Incoming architecture majors who plan to attend the 1999 fall semester may register at these times.
