High school and community college students enrolling later this year at Mississippi State University are being urged to attend spring "Discovery: MSU."

"For graduating students considering Mississippi State, the Feb. 19 'Discovery' program should be considered a must," said Jimmy Abraham, director of enrollment services.

Following registration, an opening assembly begins at 9:30 a.m. in Lee Hall auditorium. After the program, students--and their parents--will have an opportunity to meet with advisers, faculty and staff in their intended fields of study.

More than 2,000 attended last spring's event, Abraham said.

Also part of the day's schedule will be academic competitions for more than 1,200 juniors and seniors in the subjects of American history, art, chemistry, foreign languages, and physics. The art competition requires submission of a portfolio showing as many different types of a student's work as possible.

Top scorers in American history, chemistry and physics will receive scholarships, plaques or other awards. Those successfully completing the foreign language test will be eligible to receive up to eight hours of MSU course credit in French, German, Latin, or Spanish.
