Cafeteria to open on inaugural day; library featuring exhibit

For the benefit of persons coming Saturday [Feb. 6] to Mississippi State for the inauguration of President Malcolm Portera, the university's Perry Cafeteria will be serving breakfast and lunch.

Also, Mitchell Memorial Library is featuring through Feb. 8 an inaugural exhibition in its main lobby area.

The university's historic 76-year-old cafeteria, which is closed most Saturdays, will be open 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Lunch menu entrees will include turkey and dressing, roast beef and fried catfish.

The library display, which opened Monday, includes photographs of university presidents from Stephen D. Lee to Portera. Organized by the archives department, the exhibit also features inaugural programs, newspaper clippings and other materials relating to the top leadership of the land-grant institution throughout its 121-year history.

Portera, an MSU graduate and West Point native who assumed his duties Jan. 1, 1998, will formally be inaugurated in a 10 a.m. public ceremony in Humphrey Coliseum.

Dr. Cassie Pennington, president of the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, will conduct the investiture, while Commissioner of Higher Education Thomas Layzell will bring greetings. Gov. Kirk Fordice and other officials are scheduled to attend.
