As America goes to the polls, Mississippi State University's library is electing to display a month-long exhibit of political memorabilia.
"On the Campaign Trail," a variety of election-theme items from the Special Collections of the Mitchell Memorial Library, is on display through Nov. 30 in the second-floor lobby.
"These materials have been accumulated through the political participation at all levels of many Misissippians," said manuscripts librarian Mattie Sink.
Among public officials who have donated to the collection are retiring Rep. G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery, former Rep. David Bowen and the late Sen. John C. Stennis and Rep. Charles Griffin.
"Also represented are political organizers, local and state party officials, and campaign managers," Sink said.
In addition to displaying some of what the library already has in its files, she expressed hope that the exhibit will inspire private political junkies to donate interesting items they may have stored in attics and cardboard boxes.
"We gladly welcome contributions to our political materials collection," Sink said, adding that "some of the more unusual pieces on display come from known and anonymous sources."
The exhibit opened earlier this week as part of the library's observation of Mississippi Archives Week. Sponsored by the Society of Mississippi Archives, the week is designed to educate the public about the resources available in the state's libraries.
