Cotton is being picked at the university's R.R. Foil Research Center. Based on USDA estimates, Mississippi cotton yields this year are the second highest ever recorded, with some specialists indicating that it may be cotton's best year ever. Cotton in Mississippi is ranked third behind poultry and forestry in state commodities with $598 million dollars of revenue produced each year.
