Tropical Storm Isaac, which may become a hurricane by Tuesday, blows sea oats in Biloxi. The plants were planted as part of a long-term sustainability project headed by Mississippi State's Pete Melby, landscape architecture, and Tom Cathcart, agricultural and biomedical engineering. The sea oats and other coastal plants facilitate natural sand dunes and reduce the amount of sand blowing into U.S. Route 90. While the terrain may look different after Isaac goes through, the plants and dunes will survive, and Mississippi State's commitment to the Gulf Coast will continue.
