At a Wednesday program in MSU's Mitchell Memorial Library, "The Optimist's Daughter" by Pulitzer Prize-winning Mississippi author Eudora Welty was announced as the book selection for the university's 2011 Maroon Edition common reading program. MSU President Mark E. Keenum made the announcement, with literary scholar and MSU English professor emeritus Noel Polk discussing the book's significance. The Maroon Edition project is an annual initiative to engage all freshmen, along with interested members of the campus community, in reading and discussing the same book during the summer term and fall semester.
