Fulton native Constance McMillen listens to Sarah Young, a lecturer in Mississippi State's social work program, during a university gender studies event on Thursday. After speaking to the group on campus as part of MSU's observance of Women's History Month, the audience heard Young discuss events "behind the scenes" related to McMillen's federal lawsuit during previous work with the American Civil Liberties Union. McMillen, 19, made national news in 2010 when her high school canceled the prom to prevent her and her girlfriend from attending as a couple and wearing tuxedos. As a result of the school officials' actions, the ACLU filed a lawsuit that led to the school including sexual orientation as part of its discrimination policy.
