It may not be "soccer stadium," but the courtyard at Zacharias Village works well for a fun game of pick up soccer and as a reminder of how big the sport has become. While more than 3 million between the ages of 5 and 19 now play in soccer leagues in this country, it wasn't until the 1994 men's World Cup competition was held in the U.S. that interest became widespread among Americans. Soccer did, however, see a brief heyday in the mid 1970s, when a Brazilian named Pele - now considered the greatest player of all time - came to New York to play for the Cosmos.
