The Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems is the recipient of a $1.08 million grant from the Environmental Protection Agency as part of the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program. The university, working with industry partners KLLM Transport Services and Dufour Petroleum Inc., will use the funds to install battery air conditioning systems on more than 100 trucks. The technology reduces diesel emissions on long-haul trucks by allowing the driver to run air conditioning without idling the vehicle's engine. The university will also offer a limited number of competitive mini-grants for installation of the idle reduction technology for some independent truckers in the state.
